A new tax plan being rushed through Congress would impose huge tax increases on family-owned farms when transferred at death. Under the Democrats plan, families would have to pay taxes on the value of a farm when a loved one died, even if they did not sell the property or realize any profit. This plan could force farmers around the country to give up their family farms and sell their assets when their parents die just to pay the transfer tax.
In response to this misguided and unfair tax increase, hundreds of leading farm groups from across the country raised their voices in opposition to any change in current transfer laws for family farms.
